Step 3 Ensure your dishwasher is a perfect fit for your home.

Do It Yourself

Measure the height, width and depth of the designated cutout space in your kitchen
(for portable dishwashers, measure the area where it will be between uses).

  • Here's how to measure:
  • W: side to side (most dishwashers are 24" wide)
  • D: back to front (most dishwashers are 25" deep)
  • H: top to bottom (most dishwashers are 34"-36" tall)
  • Note: Some models offer adjustable leveling legs to accommodate varying counter heights.

Measure the clearance of doorways, hallways and other points-of-entry that will be used during delivery.

Hire a Pro

Confirm that electrical output is sufficient for the location of your new dishwasher.

You will need:

  • A grounded electrical outlet (no extension cord or adaptor).
  • A separate 15-amp or 20-amp circuit.

Ensure that you have the proper water supply and drain connections to install and run your dishwasher properly.

Contact a professional installer for a first-time under counter installation. New installations require significant carpentry, electrical and plumbing skills.

Refer to your dishwasher's use and care guide for additional installation requirements and guidelines.

Decide how you will dispose of your old dishwasher.

  • Lowe's will haul away your old appliance for free or a small fee. (Local government disposal surcharges may apply). Visit your local Lowe's for more details.
  • Contact your local municipality to determine the most ecologically responsible way to recycle your old appliances.
